"Mr. Alfred Joseph Knight, one of eleven Birmingham men awarded the Victoria Cross during the first World War,died in his sleep early yesterday at his home in Elvetham Road, Edgbaston. He was aged 72 and leaves a widow, a son and two daughters.
Mr Knight, who was educated at St Philip's Grammar School, Edgbaston, won the VC at Passchendale in November 1917. It was awarded "for most conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty during the operations against the enemy positions".
Then a sergeant in the Post Office Rifles (London Regiment), Mr Knight dashed through a barrage of gunfire and captured an enemy strongpoint single-handed. Later, 12 of the enemy with a machine gun were encountered in a shell-hole. Again he rushed forward by himself, bayoneted two and shot a third and caused the remainder to scatter.
Subsequently he took a leading part in an attack on a fortified farm and took command of all the men of his own platoon and of the platoons without officers.
Mr Knight was a Civil Servant for 42 years, having entered the service of the Post Office in 1909. He transferred to the Ministry of Labour in 1920, and from 1931 to 1937 was manager of the Employment Exchange at York and afterwards in the Trade Board section at Leeds.
He returned to Birmingham in 1941 and when he retired, in 1951, he was senior wages inspector in the Midland Region of the Miidtry of Labour. In the 1951 Birthday Honours List Mr Knight was awarded the MBE for his services as a ministry official. Mr Knight was a former presidento fhte city of Birmingham and York Circles of the Catenian Association, the Roman Catholic professional and businessman's organisation. At his death he was the only member of the association holding the VC.
